Eight guests, better everything: the case for shrinking your guest list

There is a version of hosting where you invite thirty people, spend four hundred quid, and spend the entire night in the kitchen refilling things. Then there is the version where you invite eight, spend the same four hundred quid, and actually sit down.

Loads of hosts are quietly switching to the second one. Same budget, a quarter of the guests, and everything each person touches gets four times better.

The invite list is the real decision

Thirty people at a party means you will have a proper conversation with maybe six of them. Eight people around one table means one conversation that everybody is part of. Ten is about the ceiling. Past that the table splits into two conversations and you have lost the thing you shrank the list for.

Spend it on the table, not the room

Decorating a room for eight people is wasted money because nobody is looking at the walls. They are looking at the table for four hours. Heavy linen instead of paper. Proper napkins. Candles low enough that people can see each other over them.

Layering is what makes a table look expensive. A runner over a cloth, a charger under a plate, a small dish for whatever is being passed around.

Private chefs, and the cheaper version

Hiring a chef for eight people is reasonable per head now, and it is the fastest growing bit of this trend. If that is out of budget, the principle still transfers. Buy one course rather than making four. A good cheese board, a proper dessert from the bakery.

Keep the food hot without hovering

This is the bit that trips up small dinners. You plate eight portions, then the last two are lukewarm because you were talking. A warming tray on the sideboard fixes the most common complaint about home dinner parties, and lets you serve when people are ready rather than when the oven demands it.

Light it properly or do not bother

Overhead lighting kills a dinner party. It is the single most common mistake and it is free to fix. Turn the big light off. You want the light low and to the sides so faces are lit softly rather than from above.

Rechargeable cordless table lamps have quietly taken over restaurants for exactly this reason. No wire across the table, no wax, and you can move them outside for coffee afterwards.

The bit nobody plans for

Small dinners run long. Four hours, sometimes five. Plan for the back half of the night: somewhere comfortable to move to, a second bottle you were not counting on, and something sweet that appears around eleven.
