Throwing a street party for the end of the holidays, without doing all the work

The last week of the summer holidays is a strange one. The kids are bored, the parents are fried, and everyone is vaguely dreading the 6.45am alarm coming back.

A block party fixes the mood better than anything else I know. It also solves a problem most neighbourhoods have, which is that people have lived opposite each other for six years and still only nod.

Delegation is the entire strategy

Here is the thing about a block party. If you cater it yourself you will hate it and never do another one.

Split it by household and be specific. Vague requests get you nine bowls of crisps. Assign one family the salads, one the puddings, one the ice and soft drinks, and put whoever has the biggest barbecue in charge of the grill. Do it on a group chat with a shared list where people claim a slot.

The other thing worth checking early is whether your council needs a road closure notice. Most do, most are free, and most want four to six weeks warning.

Games that work when the age range is four to seventy

This is the part that makes or breaks a mixed-age event. The rule I would stick to is that anything needing more than about fifteen seconds of explanation is out. You are not going to gather everyone for a briefing.

Lawn games win because they are self-explanatory and you can join halfway through. Bean bag toss, skittles, giant connect four, quoits. Set them up in a line down one side of the road so there is a natural drift from one to the next.

The cookout, done for numbers

Burgers, hot dogs, corn, slaw. Everyone knows what it is and no child refuses it. For a street worth of people you want two grills minimum, running different things, so the queue splits. Prep the burgers the night before and stack them between greaseproof paper in a cool box.

Disposable serveware is unavoidable at this scale. Bagasse or palm leaf holds up to a burger with sauce on it, where a cheap paper plate folds in half and ends up on the road.

The outdoor movie is the closer

This is the bit that turns a barbecue into an event people talk about in October. You put a sheet up on a garage door, everyone drags out camping chairs and duvets, and the little ones fall asleep halfway through. Start it as the light goes, which in late August is somewhere around half eight.

A portable projector with decent brightness is the only real purchase. Look for something you can run off a battery or a long extension, with sound loud enough to carry outdoors, or plan to pair it with a bluetooth speaker.

Pick a film everyone has already seen. Nobody is concentrating and that is fine.

Timings that actually work with kids

Start at three. Food at five. Games running the whole way through. Film at half eight, done by ten. That shape gets the youngest kids fed and entertained before they melt down, and it gives the adults an hour or two at the end.

One last thing

Knock on the doors of the people who did not reply to the group chat. Every street has somebody who would love to come and assumed they were not really being asked. That is usually the person who ends up bringing the best thing on the table.
