Plan Halloween in August and you will get the good stuff

Nobody wants to think about October in the last week of August. I understand. The garden furniture is still out.

But here is the thing about Halloween. Anything decent sells out by the first week of October, and what is left in the shops after that is orange plastic and fake cobwebs. The people whose parties look incredible ordered in August. That is the entire secret.

Autumn has moved on from orange

The pumpkin-and-black palette has been quietly retired by anyone paying attention. What has replaced it is much richer and looks a lot more expensive.

Think terracotta, burgundy, deep rust, ochre, plum, and a bruised sort of brown. Colour blocking rather than pattern, so big flat areas of one shade next to another. It works because it is the actual colour of the season rather than a cartoon of it.

Dried and preserved stems are worth buying now for another reason. They last all season, you will reuse them at Christmas, and the good ones go by mid-September.

Gothic masquerade, and why grown-up Halloween works better

Adult Halloween parties have a recurring problem. Half the guests arrive in full costume, half arrive in a jumper, and everyone feels wrong.

A masquerade fixes it in one move. The mask is the costume. Somebody can turn up in what they would wear to dinner, put a mask on at the door, and be fully dressed for the party.

The gothic version is what is trending, and it is genuinely striking. Black, oxblood, antique gold. Candelabras. Heavy fabric. Mirrors. It is Halloween for people who do not want a plastic skeleton in their hallway. Buy a box of spare masks and leave them by the door for the ones who forget.

Light it like a film set

Autumn parties happen in the dark, which is a gift if you use it and a disaster if you do not. Overhead lighting off. Everything at table height or lower. Candles clustered on any flat surface you have got, and a couple of warm uplighters throwing shadows up the walls.

Real candles for the tables people sit at, flameless ones for anywhere they will get knocked. Tall candelabras are having a proper moment and they do more work than any other single object.

The harvest table, if Halloween is not your thing

Not everyone wants skulls. There is a whole strand of autumn hosting that skips Halloween entirely and goes for harvest instead. Long table, mismatched candles, squashes used as objects rather than decorations, bread on boards, apples piled in a bowl.

What to order now versus later

Order in August anything that is specific and likely to sell out. Masks, costume pieces, dried florals, candelabras, coloured glassware. Leave the food, the fresh flowers and the pumpkins until the week of.

One small thing that pays off

Take a photo of the table when you have finished setting it. Next year you will have forgotten exactly how it looked, and you will spend an afternoon rebuilding something you had already worked out.
